Hans Bernd August Gustav was born in 1905. He was the son of Johannes Maximilian Gustav von Haeften and Agnes Charlotte Clara von Brauchitsch. He worked for the Foreign Office in Germany, but was strongly against the Nazi regime, participating in the resistance movement and supported the failed 20 July plot to assassinate Hitler. He was executed by hanging in Berlin on August 15, 1944 in the aftermath of the failed 20 July plot.
